My foreign movie selection for this Halloween is “Repulsion.” Polanski’s first English speaking film, portrays how one woman’s deep fear and disgust for men leads her to psychosis. Carole, played by the ever-brilliant Catherine Deneuve, reminds me of a 5 year-old girl with a Cinderella persona suddenly waking up as a beautiful 19 year-old woman to confront the real world. She is surrounded by things and people she seems not ready to understand (or maybe understands too well) and is totally unable to communicate her feelings. Her surreal fantasies are only hindered slightly by the films out-dated special effects. I highly recommend this film to fans of psychological thrillers. Cuddle up on the couch with some hot cocoa, a warm blanket and a loved one but men…make sure to hide the knives!
