Joji Koyama - Songs to draw to.

Artist and film director Joji Koyama made this mixtape for File Magazine. He's an award winning filmmaker whose directed short films such as ‘From Nose to Mouth’ , ‘Watermelon Love’ and ‘First Place’. He also goes by the name Woof Wan-Bau when directing music videos. His music videos include artists such as Four tet, Mogwai and Coldcut. Joji Koyama said, “I’ve been working on a lot of drawings this year, and I listen to a lot of music when i’m drawing, so i guess that’s where the slight theme comes from.”

Jónsi of Sigur Rós - "Boy Lilikoi"

Jonsi, lead singer of Sigur Rós, will be coming out with a solo album soon. "Boy Lilikoi" is the first song to surface from the album. It should be an interesting record especially because of his collaboration with avant garde composer Nico Muhly (Grizzly Bear, Antony, Bjork).

Warpaint- "Exquisite Corpse E.P."

I'm a little late on this one but since Trickety is new, I figure I can backtrack a bit. The L.A.-based all female trio, Warpaint dropped the "Exquisite Corpse E.P" on Oct. 5th. Below is a video of the three creeping through the night with sparklers over the song "Stars." Below that, the song "Elephant" surges with body groovin' bass intensity until it desolves into a phlanger induced trip out (don't adjust your speakers). And finally the song, "Billy Holiday" is a more subdued, folk tune with beautiful multilayered vocals. It slowly morphs into a hazy, somber version of the Motown hit "My Guy." Warpaint is definitely a band to keep an eye on.

Hostage- "Valhalla"

Scottish producer, Hostage, packs a monster punch with "Valhalla." The dance track is packed with huge basslines, war chants and dark orchestral sections. The "Valhalla EP" is out via the Nightshifters label which you can purchase on Beatport. On the EP are remixes by Angel Alanis and Rampage as well as Chrissy Murderbot and Mommas Boy.

This reminded me that anyone who hasn't seen the incredible Dave LaChapelle documentary, "RIZE!" really needs to ASAP. It chronicles the practice of "Clowning" and "Krumping" that began in South Central L.A. You can watch the whole movie for free here.

Marissa Nadler- "Dying Breed" and "Silvia"

I've been looking for a good excuse to write about Marissa Nadler and then I found it! This live footage from Brooklyn's Union Hall is courtesy of Ray Concepcion. Ray has a unique filming style that's not great if you want to see what's going on, but it nicely captures the emotional quality of the music. The song, "Dying Breed" is from Nadler's third album, "Songs III: Bird On The Water." Nadler has such a haunting voice and the atmosphere of her music is almost always melancholy and serene. She will be perfect for fans of 60's artists such as Leonard Cohen and Sibylle Baier and more contemporary artists such as Josephine Foster and Faun Fable. Muffin- "Judee"

Thanks to Marlene from luzzzalig and microphones in the trees for the tip on this wonderful new group from Japan. Muffin's debut record "Grapes" wins the award for best artist name and album name combination. Filled with gentle sounds, the album is reminiscent of the Icelandic group Múm with their use of music boxes, soft female vocals, and overall dreaminess. I highly recommend it!

Blakroc- "Coochie" (Ludacris, Ol' Dirty Bastard, &The Black Keys)

The Black Keys hit the studio with hip-hop legends Mos Def, RZA, Q-Tip and many others to create a collaborative rap-rock record called Blakroc. It's not a perfect record but the song, "Coochie" featuring Ludacris and Ol' Dirty Bastard is gritty and has plenty of swagger.

We Make It Good- Volume 11: Salem

The new We Make It Good compilation was created by the psych goth band, SALEM. On the WMIG site it says, "Pink socks, a dirty mattress, wallpaper peeling off the walls, empty cough syrup bottles, and soiled wall to wall carpeting all come to mind after repeated listens to this new Salem mix." The mix is sort of like a series of kinky voice messages left on an answer machine by a deranged serial killer.

Nouvelle Vague- NV3

The French group Nouvelle Vague is known for taking 80's punk songs and turning them into 60's Bossa Nova pop songs. Their third album titled NV3 is set to be released on January 27th. The first track, "Master & Servant" is a Depeche Mode cover performed by Mélanie Pain & Martin Gore (from Depeche Mode). The second track, "Ca Plane Pour Moi" is a Plastic Bertrand cover.

Neil Young- The Fresh Prince of Bel Air Theme

Jimmy Fallon's impersonation of Neil Young singing the Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme song is golden. Maybe there's hope for the late night show yet.

Diego Stocco - "Music from a Tree"

Diego Stocco inspires the imagination by making music (and good music at that) using nothing but a tree. Diego went as far as to tune the twigs by trimming them with a pencil sharpener! Well done, fellow madman!

Fever Ray- "Keep the Streets Empty For Me"

Along with the release of Fever Ray's self titled 3 disc box set is a music video for the song, "Keep the Streets Empty For Me." Karin Dreijer Andersson sings ominous lyrics such as "Take me home before the storm, Velvet moths will keep us warm" as well as some transcending lines like "Uncover our heads and reveal our souls, We were hungry before we were born."

Sacred Harp- "Next Time Too"

Sacred Harp is comprised of Norwegian, Finnish and Dutch musicians. The music is dark, icy, and minimalist...a perfect soundtrack for a night of driving aimlessly through the desert. In their bio it says, "Sacred Harp is an imaginary movie directed by David Lynch, where Billie Holiday, Deerhoof, Earth and Low are picking mushrooms with John Cage." Their debut self-titled album will be released sometime this month via The Perfect Hoax.

Summer Camp, a mysterious new group from London/Sweden, creates a wonderful cover of the song "I Only Have Eyes For You." Laura Snapes from NME explains, it was "a song written in the 1930s for the musical 'Dames' which detailed the blackmailing escapades of a wily young lady, bringing its femme fatale connotations into the modern age by sampling dialogue from the kickass bloodthirsty 80s film, 'Heathers'. Maybe they're more sinister than their dusky synth whirligigs and sisterly harmonies would suggest..."

Beck- "Harry Partch"

Beck released his new song, "Harry Partch" on his website today. The song is a tribute to the avant garde pioneer who created the 43-tone scale. Partch used a combination of unusual instruments when composing his music such as, marimbas, cloud chamber bowls, artillery shell casings, metal whang-guns, singing bowls, tuned liquor bottles and hubcaps. His most popular work is "Delusion of the Fury." One of the other reasons people assume Beck titled his song this, was to egg on Matt Friedberger of the Fiery Furnaces who said "Fuck You" to Radiohead for dedicating a song to Harry Patch. Saying that Radiohead was just trying to associate themselves with what hipsters think is cool. The one problem with this is if you look closely there is an "r" missing in the name "Harry Patch." The Radiohead song was actually a tribute to the longest surviving UK vet of WWI, not the avant garde pioneer, Harry Partch. But that's what Friedberger gets for associating himself with music much cooler than his own and just in time to promote an upcoming release too...oh, the irony.

Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance"

The new video "Bad Romance" by Lady GaGa is sexy and surreal, to say the least. She continues to find unusual ways shock the senses with her eyes bulging, an exposed vertebra, a fur coat on fire, sexy lingerie, an entourage of dancing pod people, and vodka drinking sex addicts. Not being a big fan of Pop music, there are some cringe inducing moments for me, but on a whole her futuristic glam pop works well here.
